In the face of the global climate crisis, it is becoming increasingly evident that collective action is needed to address the challenges we face. While international agreements and national policies are essential, it is at the local level where tangible change can be achieved.

Municipalities have a unique opportunity to implement greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction practices and inspire change within their communities. Municipal plans and policies directly influence local infrastructure, transportation systems, and land-use planning. By implementing climate-friendly policies such as renewable energy programs, public transportation improvements, and green building standards, they can significantly reduce GHG emissions and promote sustainable development within their jurisdictions. By showcasing successful initiatives, such as community-led renewable energy projects, home retrofit programs or waste reduction programs, municipalities can also inspire community members to advance climate action.

As municipalities push forward to implement a suite of climate mitigation actions, they can accelerate progress by sharing experiences, best practices, and lessons learned with their peers. Clean Air Partnership (CAP), through its Clean Air Council program, recognizes the importance of showcasing municipal climate action being advanced in various communities and inspire other jurisdictions to follow suit. CAP has developed a Climate Action Atlas to highlight successful municipal climate mitigation actions. Each year, CAP releases a Climate Action Report detailing the latest GHG reduction actions underway in Ontario. This annually released report showcases regional advancements in climate action and identifies areas where further actions are required.

Highlighting municipal climate action is crucial to highlight our collective climate action efforts. By recognizing the significant role played by local governments, showcasing progress of mitigation action advancement, and fostering collaboration, we are creating a powerful momentum towards achieving climate targets. The successes of one municipality can inspire and empower others to take bold steps towards a low-carbon future. As our municipalities continue to advance their net-zero emission goals, it is essential to share and celebrate their climate mitigation achievements, for they are the catalysts of change in the journey towards a sustainable and resilient world.
