Ajax Textile Diversion Program

March 21, 2022 by

Timeline: 2021 onwards.

In May 2021, Council approved the Textile Diversion Program and corresponding actions to help drastically increase textile diversion rates across the community through improved education and outreach. The textile diversion program is being implemented in five distinct phases, each of which has key milestones to monitor implementation and success.

Environmental Impact of Textile Waste:

Our clothing is made up of synthetic plastic fibers, such as polyester. These fibers are non-biodegradable and can take up to 200 years to decompose. Synthetic fibers are used in 72% of our clothing. Discarded textiles that end up in landfills or incinerators generate a huge amount of emissions.
