Timeline: 2021 onwards
In 2021, Kingston added a pair of new electric Zamboni ice-resurfacing machines to its Invista Centre rink. The City now sees approximately 80 percent cost savings related to fuel and energy consumption and between 30 and 35 percent savings on ongoing maintenance costs.
2022 Update:
Kingston added three new electric ice-resurfacers to its fleet in 2022. The City received three electric ice resurfaces in December 2022 and these units will be used at Springer Market Square, Leon’s Centre and the Memorial Centre.
The Memorial Centre machine was brought into operation in 2022, with the Leon’s Centre and Springer Market Square ones to begin operating later in 2023.
With these three new machines, Kingston is nearly halfway to their goal of replacing all 12 propane-powered machines with quiet, zero-emission electric machines. Replacing gas-powered machines aligns with the City’s Climate Leadership Plan and the goal to achieve GHG reduction targets.
