To meet its climate commitments, the Town of Whitby needs to transition to a sustainable transportation system which includes the rapid adoption of electric vehicles.
To support electrification of private vehicles, charging infrastructure needs to be made readily available for public, staff and fleet use. In 2019 and 2020, the Town of Whitby participated in a joint funding application to the Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program administered by Natural Resources Canada to establish a charging station network across the community. Successful in both rounds of funding, the Town carried out the installation in December 2021 and has been operating a network of Level 2 charging stations across 10 municipally owned facilities since then.
