January 12, 2022 by

City of Toronto Advanced Energy Performance Buildings

Timeline: Construction began in 2020.

The innovative 19,000sf, 2 storey with basement, Mount Dennis Childcare Centre is part of the City of Toronto’s first net zero energy neighbourhood pilot project. This childcare facility will be the first of its kind, and will accommodate 98 children, making it the largest daycare facility in the City of Toronto. The childcare centre is designed to net zero energy and net zero carbon emissions.

The building envelope and mechanical systems will follow Passive House high performance principles and will have rooftop solar panels projected to generate 112,000 kWh/a year (the building’s projected use is 91,000 kWh/a year); triple pane windows; heat recovery ventilation; batteries and below-grade walls.
