Ammonia Based Aeration Control and Co-generation Initiative at Clarkson Wastewater Treatment Plant in Peel

April 28, 2022 by

The Clarkson Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is in south Mississauga and serves west part of Brampton and Mississauga. It currently has treatment capacity 350 million litres of wastewater per day and serves approximately 560,000 people in Peel. The facility upgrades seeks to address the increase in capacity the Region expects to see in the coming decade due to population growth. Additionally, this project aligns with the Region’s goals of improving energy security and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  The ABAC component of the project will be targeting the most energy intensive sub-process of the wastewater treatment process which is aeration and will yield significant cost savings because of reduced energy use. The Co-gen part of the project will deliver significant GHG emission reduction due to heat recovery from an internal combustion engine, which can be used to support thermal load of the digestion process and the rest of the treatment plant.
