Smog Summit 2002
During May and June of 2002, six citizens' forums were held in Toronto and the GTA to engage citizens in informed deliberation on what can be done to improve the quality of the air we breathe. A Citizens' Declaration on Clean Air, together with a call-to-action, was presented to government officials at the Smog Summit on June 21.
At the citizens' forums, participants discussed the issue of smog and offered practical solutions to government, industry, as well as individuals and communities on how to improve our air quality. These solutions and recommendations have been synthesized into a final report titled the Future is Clear.
On June 21, political representatives from all levels of government within the GTA gathered to publicly sign the Inter-governmental Declaration on Clean Air, to report on progress made since last year's Summit, and to announce new initiatives to reduce smog. Key announcements included the development of a low sulphur fuel purchasing standard, and renewable energy procurement policies. Ontario Environment Minister Chris Stockwell announced the inclusion of respirable particulate matter (PM 2.5) in the Province's Air Quality Index as key step towards improving the GTA's air quality.
Funders for the 2002 Smog Summit included: Enbridge Gas Distribution, Toronto Hydro, Ontario Power Generation, Government of Canada,Government of Ontario, City of Toronto, Toronto Atmospheric Fund, and the GTA Clean Air Council.
