8th ANNUAL SMOG SUMMIT:
MEASURABLE ACTION ON CLEAN AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE
TORONTO - The Clean Air Partnership is expecting local politicians to highlight clean air actions that they will implement during the coming year Executive Director, Eva Ligeti announced today. The Smog Summit is an annual opportunity for local politicians to show leadership to reduce air pollution and manage climate change.
“We are seeking announcements with measurable results such as reducing energy use in municipal buildings, refitting municipal building stock, increasing transit ridership and so on,” said Ligeti. “Being ‘green’ is not just fashionable it is necessary for clean air.
Provincial government leaders scheduled to speak include Ontario Minister of the Environment, Laurel Broten, and Phil McNeeley MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation, Donna Cansfield.
Municipal political leaders attending with clean air announcements include: Mayor Cam Jackson, City of Burlington; Councillor George Carlson, City of Mississauga; Regional Councillor Joyce Frustaglio, City of Vaughan, York Region; Regional Councillor Bonnie Littley, City of Pickering; Regional Councillor Rick Goldring, Halton Region; Mayor Tony Van Bynen, Town of Newmarket; Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora, Town of Richmond Hill; Mayor Marolyn Morrisson, Town of Caledon; Councillor John Henry, City of Oshawa; Councillor Erin Shapero, Town of Markham; and Regional Chair Emil Kolb, Peel Region.
The Smog Summit will take place at Toronto City Hall on June 7, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Smog Summit concludes with all politicians confirming their commitments with the signing of the 2007 Toronto and Region Inter-governmental Declarations on Clean Air.
