Energy Saving Solutions Needed as Electricity Use and Smog Reach All-Time Highs

TORONTO – The Clean Air Partnership is helping people reduce their energy consumption with energy saving solutions, said Eva Ligeti, Executive Director of the Clean Air Partnership.

Electricity demand reached all-time highs and the GTA set a new smog record this week. On hot days electricity use increases and produces more smog.

There are many ways to reduce electricity use and smog on hot days without sacrificing comfort and style. Some things to consider:

  • Turn the air conditioning off when you leave the house, and on when you return.
  • Close blinds, shades and drapes during the hottest part of the day.
  • Heat-generating items work against your air conditioner – turn them off or avoid using them during peak periods.
  • Place your air conditioner on the outside wall that gets the most shade.
  • Think long-term! Plant a leafy shade tree in front of windows that get lots of sun.

“I think many people would be surprised by the variety of ways we can reduce our electricity use, and how simple it can be,” said Ligeti.

The 4th edition of the Clean Air and Environment Guide, produced by the Clean Air Partnership, offers a wide range of energy saving solutions and ideas, such as reducing vehicle idling, using energy efficient light bulbs, installing programmable thermostats, purchasing energy efficient electronics, appliances and cars, and encouraging the development of renewable energy.

We’ve had 30 smog days this year--a new all-time record--and we are only halfway through the smog season. The previous record of 27 was set in 2002.

Smog in Ontario will result in almost 5,800 premature deaths this year and cost the province almost a billion dollars, according to the latest report from the Ontario Medical Association (OMA).

The Clean Air Partnership is a charitable organization that works in partnership to promote and coordinate improvements to local air quality.
