25 Tickets and 63 Warnings to Drivers Idling Their Vehicles

TORONTO – Idle-Free Week in the GTA continues as the Ontario Medical Association announced that smog will kill 5,800 Ontarians this year.

Vehicle emissions contribute significantly to poor air quality in the GTA. It's more important than ever to make drivers understand the negative health effects of unnecessary vehicle idling," said Eva Ligeti, Executive Director of the Clean Air Partnership.

GTA municipalities are encouraging hundreds of drivers to make a commitment to reduce their vehicle idling, as part of Idle-Free Week in the GTA.

Yesterday, Toronto gave out 25 tickets and 63 warnings to drivers idling their vehicles. In Burlington, nobody was ticketed, but enforcement officers talked to 158 drivers. Education activities took place across the GTA. In Mississauga, Idle-Free Ambassadors talked to 160 drivers. Reports from other municipalities are still coming in.

Idling creates unnecessary pollution and contributes to devastating health effects.

“GTA-wide efforts to reduce vehicle idling will help clean the air, which is a huge relief to people with respiratory problems like asthma,” said Ligeti. “When you have an asthma attack, it feels like breathing through a straw. Smog days are the worst.”
