About the Building

The Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre (HMALC) is a library and learning centre that serves 10,300 students. The building opened in 2006 and is silver LEED certified and is the first University of Toronto building to achieve a LEED status. The green features include; an outdoor air high efficiency, sensible heat/cool recovery system, a fully modulating screw chiller, lighting design with occupancy sensors and heating by UTC Pure Thermal Micro Turbine. These help to optimize energy consumption savings of 37%. Additional savings have been achieved by reducing indoor potable water use by more than 30% with low flow urinals and hand wash fountains. The Learning Centre has a roof garden and has incorporated recycled materials and regional materials in the construction of the building.
