Clean Air Partnership with Bronson Consulting Group and NRCan’s ecoENERGY for Fleets Program have completed work to develop a web-based tool that could be used by fleet managers/operators to estimate the energy consumption of their fleet and to identify opportunities to enhance energy efficiency of their operations.

This tool performs the following key functions:

1. Calculates a baseline annual fuel consumption (both estimated and actual) from existing vehicle fleet inventory (including all passenger and freight, light and heavy vehicles);

2. Provides tools for fleet managers and strategic planners to identify and analyse fuel efficiency opportunities and develop action plans for reducing fuel consumption in their organization; and

3. Ensures performance measurement by supporting yearly updating of annual fuel consumption statistics.

Following the completion of the production version of the web-based fleet tool, Natural Resources Canada’s EcoENERGY for Fleets Program expressed interest in researching and assessing the usefulness and effectiveness of the tool.

CAP with Bronson Consulting conducted this research through a pilot test with municipal fleet managers in the Greater Toronto Area. The primary objective of the pilot phase was to assess the usefulness and effectiveness of the web-based fleet management tool to support commercial and institutional fleets in reducing fuel consumption and related GHG emissions.
