Trees and Vegetation

Trees and vegetation help cool urban climates through shading and evapotranspiration.

Shading by leaves and branches reduces the amount of solar radiation that reaches the ground, and in doing so, reduces surface temperatures below the canopy. These cooler surfaces reduce the amount of heat transmitted into buildings and the atmosphere.

Evapotranspiration is the combined effect of evaporation and transpiration from plants. Evapotranspiration cools the surrounding area in the same way that mammals use sweating to keep cool.

Why Plant Trees and Vegetation?
Trees and vegetation provide many benefits to homeowners and communities. In addition to the energy reduction, cost savings and environmental benefits, trees store and sequester carbon, lower stormwater runoff amounts, enhance ecosystems and increase home values.

Homeowners are encouraged to plant native trees and vegetation on their properties.
